Arm Our Schools - Let Them Protect Our Kids

“Stop gun violence with more guns...seems smart” read a recent sarcastic post on Facebook in an argument against arming teachers. It seems commonplace to now blame law abiding gun owners for the actions of the few and in a constant grasping for straws it is our firearms they want to take away.

These people pick and choose what facts to use in their arguments. They overlook the fact that gun ownership in itself is a violent crime deterrent. Most individuals who are determined to commit murder are inherently cowards and if there is a chance that an armed individual may fight back they will typically seek out a “safer” target.

So why then do we continue to declare our schools “gun free zones?” Are we trying to demonstrate to our children that their lives are less valuable than the lives of our politicians who are surrounded by armed guards with guns? Are we trying to brainwash them to believe that firearms are bad? It’s evident that criminals don’t care about our laws and shooters use these zones as their battlefield.

It’s exhausting listening to hourly demands for “common sense gun laws.” All while ignoring the fact that gun free zones are responsible for far more deaths of innocent people in this country than law abiding gun owners.

We have taken away the ability of our schools to protect the most important things in our lives, our kids. We entrust teachers and other school staff to keep them safe yet give them just a phone and locked door to do so. Why is it so far fetched to allow teachers, administrators, or other school employees who have either served in the military or have proper firearms training and volunteer to do so, carry a concealed firearm? The deterrent alone would be enough to reduce these massacres immensely and in the event that a shooter actually challenged this new policy, our schools would finally have a fighting chance to save lives.

Those that continue to attack the second amendment and vilify gun ownership are the people who have blood on their hands, not the NRA. They weaken our defenses and tie the hands of victims. They place the right to live beneath their need for a false sense of security. It’s time we as a nation take responsibility and understand that legislation alone cannot protect us. Law Enforcement will be there when we call, but who will protect our kids during the 20 minutes it takes for them to arrive? Let’s show evil we as Americans aren’t cowards and we will protect our own.
